Position : Technical Writer
Location : Sunnyvale CA
Duration : 6 months contract with possible extension.
Project Overview :
This role combines skills needed by technical writers, editors, and content managers.
The role will focus on defining, writing, and managing (from draft through publication) a set of Getting Started guides for the portfolio of products.
These guides will provide high-level overviews of the relevant products for a given sector (eg., Storage, IoT, Networking, plus about a dozen more) and highlight potential integrations for members.
Technology Partner ecosystem (ISVs).
Completed Getting Started guides will be published to a members-only (non-public) portal as Google Docs or as PDFs.
The guides are meant to be self-service “enablement” resources for members of partner program (enabling members to develop integrated solutions, enabling members to more effectively start their journeys to becoming full partners).
Define a document structure for a series of Getting Started guides.
Refine the structure over time based on feedback and learnings (iterative refinement of the plan).
Research, interview, write, edit, and revise the document through one or two draft cycles.
Shepherd the document through the process (in collaboration with partner managers and partner engineers) from start to finish.
Prepare documents for publication (convert to PDF, incorporate appropriate links, update landing pages as needed), working with content team for Cloud Connect.
Top 3 Daily Responsibilities:
For each Getting Started guide: Research subject area, talk with Partner Managers and Partner Engineers for the subject area, hold kick-off meeting to initiate the Getting Started guide for the subject area, identify relevant input (both internal resources and resources available on Google.com), distill numerous competing inputs into a focused 8-to-16-page guide. Develop (draft) content based on input from team, ideas from presentations, strategic plans for the sector (from the Partner Manager), and public information sources (Google.com technical articles, blogs, documentation, sample code, and so on). Iterate on the above to refine, revise, clarify, and complete coherent guide that meets the needs of members, partners, Partner Manager, and Partner Engineering.
BA/BS degree in Technical Writing, English, Journalism, Computer Science, or a related field (or 4 years of relevant experience in lieu of degree). Experience planning, researching, writing, and editing high-quality technical documents or course materials. Some technical marketing or business writing experience might be helpful. Ability to navigate a complex technical landscape and interact with multiple partner engineers and partner managers to define and agree upon the specifics for each guide. Ability to read and understand source code written in C++, Python or Java to effectively leverage available sample code when appropriate. Experience with Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, and so on (G Suite)
Independence and initiative (e.g. curious, resilient, and comfortable with ambiguity). Ability to learn quickly (e.g. provide deeply technical and process-oriented documentation 'on-demand'). Assertive and proactive(e.g. write ‘strawman’ versions of guides with minimal input, initiate reviews, and revise-rewrite docs (rather than waiting for requests to rewrite). Experience defining the overall structure of a documentation set.
